wood easel - Former Vegas showgirls try to save the show (Las Vegas Sun)

November 28th, 2008

There are just two large-scale showgirl revues left on the Las Vegas Strip, a far cry from the 1960s when every respectable casino housed its own flock of beauties in boas. To that aim Chessik has created the annual Showgirl Art Competition, an exhibit in its second year on display until August at the Nevada State Museum in Las Vegas. More improbably, it includes the artwork of high school students, who were likely stunned by their luck when a still lean, leggy Chessik, 51, and a group of former dancers arrived in their classroom to regale them with the history of the showgirl. Chessik knows this is a new world for most teenagers _ even teenagers in Las Vegas. Some of the first showgirls in Las Vegas were classically trained European ballerinas who arrived to perform in “Lido de Paris,” a review imported in 1958 by producer Donn Arden. Arden was prepared to cover up the girls if the city fathers disapproved, said Peter Michel, director of special collections at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which houses Arden’s papers.

Algonquin Regional junior Cody Wambolt works with 3-year-old Marcus Reeve-Patel during an early education class this week in Northborough. Algonquin Regional High School students spent Thursday afternoon tossing bean bags, playing with baby dolls and standing on a colorful carpet singing, "Head, shoulders, knees and toes. While it isn’t typical fare for a high school class, it’s right on target in the learning-lab preschool at Algonquin. There, high schoolers in early childhood development and education courses are the teachers of a class of bubbly 3- to 5-year-olds. The high schoolers spend two days a week in the preschool and two days in the classroom, where Loughlin leads lessons on the developmental stages, age-appropriate learning activities and discipline and guidance. Each class begins with play time, where the high schoolers spend time reading books, drawing at the easel, or tossing a ball with the younger students.
