(wood easel) Art student takes it national (Voice News)
Metheny’s art teacher, Cindy Whisman, submitted her ceramic piece “Sphere Vase” to the 2008 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, an awards program administered by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers that honors the creative talents of students across the nation. The Gold Key award signifies exceptional work and its winners are invited to New York City where their work is judged on a national level and they are honored at a national awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall. Metheny, her parents and Whisman made the trip to New York City in early June to attend the ceremony which featured notable guest speakers such as actress Kathy Bates, painter Phillip Pearlstein and singer/songwriter Mike Doughty. Culture and expanding her students’ worlds are big reasons why Whisman continues to submit her students’ works to the awards year after year.
