wood easel - Mitchell’s last days a bittersweet affair (The News Journal)

As he and his wife, Denise, of the Glasgow area, lingered over the Mitchell family’s collection of historic photos displayed in the windows of the Fairfax store, they reminisced about the store and other lost landmarks — Wanamaker’s, Almart, the Chuck Wagon. He bought the old Bennett’s 5 & 10 in the Fairfax Shopping Center, changed its name to Mitchell’s Family Store and, with his wife, Hannah, expanded it into a small department store. The store endured because of its niche markets, including Halloween costumes, holiday gifts, left-handers’ items, Boy and Girl Scout uniforms and goods, model trains, miniatures and his favorite, yo-yos. He and his wife had Dixie’s Cards & Gifts in Hockessin for many years — and closed after a big store opened nearby. As baby Jonathan naps in his stroller, mom Kirsten Belair watches her son Jacob, 2, play with Mitchell’s toy train display.
